Does Duolingo teach Darija? No. Here’s what it teaches, and what to use

No. Duolingo has no Moroccan Arabic or Darija course. Its only Arabic course, “Arabic” for English speakers, teaches Modern Standard Arabic, and it has no Arabic course at all for French speakers. We checked Duolingo’s full course list on 4 October 2026.

Duolingo says so itself: Modern Standard Arabic “is the one you’ll learn on Duolingo” (Duolingo blog), and “specifically, we teach a less-formal, spoken version of MSA” (Duolingo blog).

Why Standard Arabic isn’t Darija

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA, or fusha) is the Arabic of school, news and official documents across the Arab world. Darija is what Moroccans actually speak: Arabic roots, many words from Amazigh, French and Spanish, and simpler grammar. A Moroccan understands MSA. But in the street, at the souk or at a family dinner, people speak Darija, and someone who learned only MSA understands little of the reply.

The same everyday words, side by side:

chno? / ach?what?mādhā?

labas? / ki dayr?How are you?kayfa ḥāluk?
fin…?Where is…?ayna…?

Some words are shared (shukran and chokran, most numbers come close), which is why Duolingo’s Arabic isn’t useless. But the words you need most every day are different, and so are the verbs: “I want to go” is urīdu an adhhaba in Standard Arabic and bghit nmchi in Darija. More on the gap in Darija vs Standard Arabic.

Is Duolingo’s Arabic still worth it?

For one thing, yes: the alphabet. Duolingo teaches you to read Arabic script, which helps with signs, menus and Darija written in Arabic letters. For everything else, it’s a detour: you learn a register Moroccans don’t use with each other, then unlearn the most common words.

And Moroccans mostly text Darija in Latin letters with numbers (“3afak”, “7obb”), which no Arabic course teaches. Ten minutes with the number alphabet fixes that.

Already did Duolingo Arabic? What carries over

Good news first: it isn’t wasted. These carry over:

  • The alphabet. You can read Darija written in Arabic script.
  • Many nouns, a little shorter. Darija swallows short vowels: kitāb becomes ktab (book), madīna becomes mdina (city), kabīr becomes kbir (big). Bāb is still bab (door) and khubz is khobz (bread).

And these change, so learn them fresh:

  • Question words: how much is chhal (not kam), why is 3lach (not limādhā), where is fin (not ayna).
  • Negation: Darija wraps the verb in ma…ch. “I didn’t understand” is ma fhemtch, not lam afham.
  • The present tense: a ka- in front of the verb. “I eat” is kanakul, not ākulu.
  • Some basics: two is jouj, not ithnān.

A good two weeks to switch: the number alphabet, the 50 most common words, these question words, and ten minutes of listening a day.

What to use instead

  • A Darija app with human Moroccan voices. We compared them in the best apps to learn Darija, with prices and free tiers.
  • darji’s Level 1, free. Nine short lessons, every word said by a Moroccan, in Latin letters and Arabic script. Start the first lesson, no account needed.
  • A dictionary with the voices. Look up what you hear in the Darija dictionary: 4,800+ words, 3,500+ recorded by Moroccans.
  • Free textbooks. The Peace Corps Morocco books are free and thorough, if you like textbooks.

Will Duolingo add Darija?

We found no announcement. Duolingo explains that it chose Standard Arabic because it’s understood across the Arab world. If that changes, we’ll update this page.

Questions

Can I learn Moroccan Arabic on Duolingo? No. Duolingo only teaches Modern Standard Arabic, from English. It helps with the alphabet, not with everyday Moroccan speech.

Do Moroccans understand Standard Arabic? Yes, from school and television. But they answer in Darija, so you need Darija to follow the conversation.

Is there a “Duolingo for Darija”? Several Darija apps use short, game-like lessons: Morolingo has hearts, and GoDarija and darji have lessons with audio. See the comparison.
